Night Music: Moon Wiring Club

Go here, my little badgers of delight, and click on the bit that says MP3 JUKEBOX. And be enthralled by the spectral and uchronic sounds of the Moon Wiring Club, whom I have described before as "like a gang of mad people were put in charge of a time machine." It is very definitely night music. Especially if, like me, you spent your childhood staying up late on Friday nights to watch old horror films.

G’night.

On Whitechapel Tonight (3jul09)

On my internet knocking-shop tonight:

* The Self-Portrait Imagethread (Jul 2009) - always good for a laugh. Currently featuring less close-up photographs of stubbly and confused-looking young men than usual.

* I’d Like To Politely Ask For Help With My Webcomic - help this person out?

* The July 2009 Book Club

…actually, it occurs to me that I really have to find time to sweep the place out again…

Rewind

So. BBC TV’s ROBIN HOOD gets cancelled. ITV’s PRIMEVAL and DEMONS get cancelled. ITV also declares that it will not run drama series, aside of course from soaps, before 9pm.

BBC’s response? A teenage-themed prequel to the thirty-year-old ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES comedy workhorse, and, for the fourth time, the loathesome and archaic children’s book JUST WILLIAM will be adapted for television.

Why not put up a sign outside Broadcasting House saying YES TAKE THE LICENSE FEE AWAY FROM US WE’RE NOT GOING TO PUT UP A FIGHT IT’S A FAIR COP GUV and then have the cast of TORCHWOOD sit around it crying? (They’ve had enough fucking practise.)

(John Barrowman on TORCHWOOD’s reduction from 13 episodes to 5 as it moves from BBC2 to BBC1: "I felt like we were being punished. Other shows move from BBC3 and 2 to 1, and they don’t get cut. So why are we? It felt like every time we moved we had to prove ourselves.")

I don’t even like TORCHWOOD and ROBIN HOOD and PRIMEVAL and I’ve never sat through DEMONS. But this is so clearly a full-on retreat from the 21st Century and any storyform that doesn’t look like it was originated in The Days When Beige Rocked that I can only assume the hatches are being battened down and everyone in British television is preparing to not actually be here in five years. ITV’s already made it clear it intends to become a delivery system for game shows and reality shows. James Nesbitt, possibly the most popular actor on British tv today, is saying he’s probably going to have to move to the States because there’s not enough work left for him in Britain.

YES I’M A BIT RANTY TODAY WHY DO YOU ASK LITTLE FUCKFACE BOY

Death Wish

I went to Los Angeles, had a sort of a working holiday, came home, and am writing. Working out a lot with the trainer, got a new trampoline. The cherry tree is covered in cherries, and the wild raspberries (red and black) are out in the woods, and I find them when I walk the dog.
Nights here are filled with fireflies. Steve Brust came over for dinner tonight and brought his puppy, and we talked about stories and writing until late. It's a good world.

That's about it for excitement at this end. Lots of people have written in asking stuff about me and Amanda, and I don't really know how to answer them. Either they're really nice and pleased for us and encouraging and don't need answering, or they're the kind of things that leave me deeply puzzled, and to which the only responses are "Isn't that a bit personal?" or "Probably none of your business I'm afraid," or even "Why would you write things like that?"

Hello Neil,

Why don't you blog more often?

Just a death wish I guess. Your blog is a wonderful thing to read.

I have a rare case of skin cancer and your blog cheer me up!

Mostly because I have less to say right now, I think. Or at least, I hate repeating myself. The blog's eight years old, and over one million three hundred thousand words long. That's a lot of blogging: a lot of ideas, a lot of words, a lot of answers. People write to me with questions still, but much of the time they're questions that have already been answered on the blog, usually at some length -- the kind of things that make me think that I should spend the time I could spend writing again (say) how you get an agent into, instead, organising things and getting a really useful FAQ up and running, or just a way of finding things, particularly advice on writing.

Obviously, I'm sorry you have a rare case of skin cancer, and I would be just as sorry if it was a common sort of skin cancer. So here, to cheer you up and fulfill your dying wish: a blog, and a link to an interview http://www.wmagazine.com/w/blogs/editorsblog/2009/06/29/neil-gaiman-on.htm and also to an amazing Daily Telegraph piece in which a bunch of writers and artists suggest books for younger readers http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/bookreviews/5720639/Summer-Reading-for-Children-Adventures-to-enchanting-worlds.html.

Todd Klein, letterer extraordinaire has the fourth in his series of prints out. The art is by J. H. Williams III, and you can see it here.

Back in November I was interviewed by Chip Kidd at the 92nd St Y. (I talked about it on the blog at the time.) The whole talk, with Karen Berger's introduction and all, is up now on YouTube, and is embedded here for your pleasure. It's an hour and a half.

And finally, there are now more than 666,666 people following me on Twitter. So we had a party. It's still ongoing, the party, over at http://bit.ly/666party and to join in all you have to do is upload a photgraph of you and a Balloon. And once 600 people showed up at the party, the webgoblin made this: a mosaic. Edit to add, and here's a wonderful click to zoom in, shift-click to zoom out version at http://www.uslot.com/neilballoons/

Eddie Campbell

it's turned cold down here in the southern hemisphere. Here's a photo of a pair of jeans drying under the fan heater on the wall. You will notice that two cats have found a warm place to sit, one on each jean. I like the way cats' brains work.

Here's a cat in After the Snooter. It has been caught short, on the wrong side of the door.

Knowing the wrongness of fouling the carpet, it manages to stack its poo vertically against the door.

I like the way a cat presents its work for view:

The electric light in the bathroom failed over the weekend. The wife of my bosom gets up so early that she's been showering in the dark at both ends of the day, and it's not something easily done by candlelight. She says she hasn't seen herself for three days.

2-D Festival, Derry

Derry

Derry seen from the river Foyle

Thanks to David Campbell and everyone else at Derry for the marvellous week I spent at the 2D comics festival. 2D was organized on a European-style pattern; there were classes, workshops and lectures during the week, with a more familiar UK-style comic event (with traders and guests sketching) at the weekend. The pace was relaxed, the hospitality excellent, the ice-cream beyond belief; there was even random dancing in the street when the evening got a little chilly (though sadly, no photos thereof).

I missed quite a few people this trip, but here are (top row) Aaron with Lazarus Churchyard, Aaron with Batman, (bottom row) Eddie with a bear from Kingdom of the Wicked and Paul with a Death from Sandman.

I asked permission to Blog these, but if you'd rather your picture was taken down, just let me know and I'll remove it.

Reservoir Dogs: guests Gary Leach, Rufus Dayglo and Declan Shalvey all argue over who gets to be Mister Black while organiser David Campbell looks on. Meanwhile, I walk backwards into a bollard.

David Lloyd & Fan

2D is a relaxed, informal event in which fans get the chance to mix with creators - even international stars such as Bryan Talbot and David Lloyd - in a way not possible in the bigger mainland events.

"No, no Declan, of course I won't."

Torchwood: Rift War Signing at Forbidden Planet London

The Torchwood: Rift War collection
Torchwood © 2009 BBC

A mere two months late I bring you photos of the Torchwood: Rift War signing at Forbidden Planet on April 25th. This was a big deal for me in two ways; first, it was my first signing at the London FP, a store I remember from its first incarnation on Denmark Street in the early 80's. Second, it was wonderful to be signing alongside such luminaries as Simon Furman and Paul Grist.

Defacing Bruce's copy of Absolute Sandman.

And then there was Bruce. Bruce has to be mentioned. There's a fine line between bravery and foolhardiness, and that's where Bruce lives, right out on the edge. Yes, Bruce got me to sketch in the flyleaf of his copy of Absolute Sandman - in ink.
